I was born in 1976 in San Francisco. My parents were a doctor and a music teacher. My father was in the army stationed at the Presidio. The family moved around a lot until I was 14 years old, at which time we settled in rural Kansas. I was the classic computer geek until I was 16 when my grandmother turned me on to painting. My parents also pulled me out of public school at that age and I continued my education at home. This turned out quite well - I learned more in the next three years than I had in ten years of school. I went to college, but never finished. In my late 30s I moved to Colorado, and when I was 42 I returned to Kansas.

When I was 21 years old I had my first psychotic episode. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, which is schizophrenia concurrent with a mood disorder - bipolar in my case. Since then I have had other episodes, and I have been hospitalized more than a dozen times. Now, thanks to many years of therapy and lots of very powerful medication, I am able to function, but not function well.
